The Texarkana Wednesday Music Club, in association with Texarkana College, Texarkana Music Teachers Association, and benefactor Judy Morgan, sponsored special events that featured Scott Kirby, renowned jazz enthusiast and Scott Joplin authority. Mr. Kirby has performed the works of ragtime king, Scott Joplin, all over the country.

On Thursday, November 14, Mr. Kirby performed an Artist Recital based on Pan-American themes; jazz and the rhythmic cousins from Central and South American cultures. On Friday, November 15, Mr. Kirby gave an entertaining and informative lecture, “The Joplin Legacy.” Texarkana’s own son still has relatives living in our city, along with an active Scott Joplin Support Group.

The three-day event culminated on Saturday, with Mr. Kirby serving as competition judge for the annual James Herrin Piano Festival. Over 80 piano entrants performed for judges on Saturday morning at Texarkana College. There were Junior Competition and Senior Competition winners, as well. Event director, Mary Scott Goode, said that all of the events were well-attended and well-received, and that the piano festival continues to grow in popularity with area teachers and students.
