State Awards: The state winner in each of 13 categories will receive $200.

AFMC Marie Smallwood Thomas Award

Information: Biennial award, given in the odd numbered years, to students pursuing doctoral degrees in music

Amount: The recipient will receive $2,000.

The Marie Smallwood Thomas Biennial Award is given by the Arkansas Federation of Music Clubs to assist musicians in the pursuit of a doctoral degree. The award is made possible by an endowment given by Marie Smallwood Thomas and named in her honor.

Applicants must be native born or naturalized citizens of the United States and residents in or of
Arkansas.

Preference is given to singers, but all doctoral candidates are invited to apply.

At the invitation of the President a performance will be required at a state convention.

The deadline for application is February 15 in the odd numbered years.

Application: A complete application will consist of the following:

  1. Resumé
  2. Naturalization paper from the Immigration Department, if not native born
  3. Statement of applicant’s goals
  4. Proof of acceptance for doctoral program
  5. Letter of recommendation from the major professor in the music department where the
    applicant is studying
